Huhtamaki FFS EAO Interview

Ahead of Global Food Contact 2025, we spoke to Paula Hirsilä, Product Safety & Compliance Manager, Huhtamaki FFS EAO

Your presentation at the Global Food Contact conference will be an application case study looking at food contact compliance of moulded fibre lids. Can you tell us a bit more about your presentation?

I want to share our approach on demonstrating food contact compliance of the moulded fibre lids focusing especially on EU/Europe.

What are the key compliance challenges when assessing the safety of moulded fibre lids, particularly regarding NIAS?

Regarding analysis of NIAS, or other food contact compliance testing of fibre and paper based products, in my opinion the key is to select a migration/extraction step that is suitable and applicable for the product in question, naturally a skilled testing laboratory is essential for this part.

What do you see as the future challenges in this area? How do you see these developing in terms of both compliance and innovation?

In the EU the lack of harmonized food contact regulation for fibre and paper based products has long been a challenge, however, maybe the revision of the union food contact regulations might transform this challenge into an opportunity for those of us involved in food contact compliance and developments of new products.

What are you most looking forward to at the Global Food Contact event?

I am very excited to hear the other presentations and of course very much looking forward to discussions and networking during the conference.
